What happens if the appointment runs late?

You’ve arranged the lift. The appointment is at ten. You’ve allowed an hour.

Then the clinic is running behind.

By eleven, your parent hasn’t been called in. You’re checking your phone between meetings, wondering whether to change the return ride now or wait another twenty minutes.

If you’ve ever arranged an appointment for someone else, you’ll probably recognise this particular juggling act.

We can’t make every appointment run on time. We can, however, talk through what happens if it doesn’t.

Before the day, ask how waiting is handled. Is it included in the booking? What happens if more time is needed? Will the same person be available for the return journey, or does that need a separate arrangement?

It’s also worth thinking about the destination itself. Which entrance should be used? Would your parent appreciate someone walking in with them? Where would they feel comfortable meeting afterwards?

And if you’re the family member arranging things, agree on which updates would actually help. A message on arrival may be enough. Your parent might prefer to call you themselves once they’re finished.

The aim is to leave fewer decisions hanging over the day.

A good plan doesn’t need to be complicated. It needs to cover the likely changes and make clear who will do what.

That way, if the appointment runs late, everyone already knows the next step.
